occult books we sell are primarily those that are popular with African-American
root doctors and hoodoo practitioners. While we can not guarantee that these
occult books will teach you how to draw money, luck, and love or help you
cast off evil influences, we have confidence that you will truly appreciate the
esoteric information they contain.

Hex and Spellwork The Magical Practices of the Pennsylvania Dutch
By Karl Herr
Discover the magic behind the enchanting Hex symbols. In
Pennsylvania Dutch country, among the Old Order Amish and the strict
Mennonite congregations who live their lives parallel to modern
society, there remains the remnants of one of the oldest European
magical practices found in America: Hex, or Hex und Speilwerk, or Pow
Wow. In Hex and Spellwork, third-generation Hexenmeister Karl Herr
teaches the actual practices and examines the history of the
Swiss-German traditions from which Hex and Pow Wow are derived.
Evoked to assist people in health
and earthly prosperity and to achieve what they legitimately desire in
life, or to counteract the negative spell of a witch, hex is positive

The Clavis or Key to the Magic of Solomon
by Joseph Peterson
The Clavis or Key to the Magic of Solomon is one of several notebooks from the
estate of Ebenezer Sibley, transcribed under the direction of Frederic Hockley (1808-1885).
Sibley was a prominent physician and an influential author, who complemented his scientific
studies with writings on the "deeper truths" including magic, astrology, alchemy, and
hypnotherapy. Both Sibley and Hockley were major inspirations in the occult revival of the
past two centuries, influencing A.E. Waite, S.L. Mathers, Aleister Crowley, as well as the
Golden Dawn, Rosicrucian, and Masonic movements. This collection reflects Sibley's teachings
on the practical use of celestial influences and harmonies. The Clavis contains clear and
systematic instructions for constructing magical tools and pentacles for many practical
purposes. It includes eight separate magical texts: The Mysterious Ring, Experiments of the
Spirits, Birto, Vassago, Agares, Bealpharos, The Wheel of Wisdom, and the Complete Book of
Magic Science. The manuscript reproduced here is the most accurate and complete known, very
beautifully and carefully written complete with extraordinary hand-colored seals and colored
handwritten text.

Legends of Incense, Herb, and Oil Magic
by Lewis de Claremont, restored, revised, and edited, by catherine yronwode
From 1936, when it burst on the scene, until 2006, when it went out of print, Legends of Incense, Herb, and Oil Magic was an occult shop classic. The first non-academic book that taught African American hoodoo folk magic, it was advertised in Black-owned newspapers nationwide and became many a rural rootworker's introduction to the convenience of mail-order spiritual supplies.
The author, whose name was certainly not "Lewis de Claremont," took the secret of his identity to the grave, but the formulas he introduced and his descriptions of down-home tricks with herbs, candles, incense, powders, baths, and talismans are recognized as the foundation of modern hoodoo.
On the 80th anniversary of its original publication, the Lucky Mojo Curio Company is proud to present a restored and revised edition of this important text, edited by catherine yronwode. Filled with curious lore and useful tips, this beautifully illustrated book belongs in every conjure worker's library.

The Long-Lost Friend, A 19th Century American Grimoire
by John George Hohman; edited by Daniel Harms
"The Long Lost Friend" is an English-language edition of "Der Lange Verborgene Freund," a
magical receipt-book written in German by Johann Georg Hohman, and published first in
Pennsylvania in 1820. Its original title would be better translated as "The Long Hidden
Vade-Mecum," but since 1846, it has been known in English as "The Long Lost Friend" and the
author is now "John George" Hohman to his English-language readers. In the late 19th century,
an edition bearing the title "Pow Wows of the Long Lost Friend" was published, and the
form of German folk-magic described herein is now commonly referred to among
Americans as "Pow Wow magic," despite the facvt that it has nothing to do with
Native American culture, in which the word "Pow Wow" originated. In other words, this
classic spell book is as mixed and minged as the United States itself. There is
nothing like it, and it has been a classic American grimoire since 1820. This
is an annotated edition that places the book's history in context.

6th & 7th Books Moses - Peterson Hardcover
attributed to Moses, edited by Joseph Peterson
For people interested in folk magic. The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses, arguably one of
the most popular magick books ever published, contains two secret apocrypha ascribed to
Moses, perhaps pseudepigraphically. The book consists of a collection of texts, which claim
to explain the magick Moses used to win the biblical magick contest with the Egyptian
priest-magicians, part the Red Sea, and perform other miraculous feats. It includes
instruction in the form of invocations, magick words, and seals for calling upon the angels
to affect worldly ends, from the sublime (calling down a plague of locusts and frogs
upon your enemy) to the mundane (getting more money). Many manuscripts and printed pamphlet
versions circulated in Germany in the 1800s, and an English translation by Johann Scheible
first appeared in New York in 1880 that had not been corrected or re-edited until now.
In creating this restored, corrected edition, Joseph Peterson drew on Scheible's final
edition of the text and his original sources. It will be of great interest to those who have
suffered through prior editions and anyone looking for a traditional source of Western magick.
Used in various modern traditions of American folk magick, from Pennsylvania Dutch
hexmeisters and contemporary eclectic magicians, to African American hoodoo and
root work practitioners. Updated or fresh translations from original German, Latin, and Hebrew
sources and restoration of censored or left out passages in earlier editions and 35 pages
of text never before translated. Describes the Biblical magick ascribed to Moses and its
application. Extensively illustrated with over 100 magical seals, signs, and sigils.

Dream Singers
by Anthony Shafton
A reverence for dreams runs like a clear spring through
African American experience. Dream-singers distills this heritage through a
vivid look at the private dream lives of more than one hundred African
Americans. Gathered here are the dreams and understandings of the famous - such as
literary lions John Edgar Wideman and Gloria Naylor - as well as everyday people:
men, women, and children who discuss their dreams and visions and what they
mean. Anthony Shafton explores the prevalence of ancestor dreams, the belief in
predictive dreaming, the openness to dreamlike experiences in the waking state,
and the link between dreams and spirituality at the core of the black dream
experience. The exploration reveals an intriguing African connection underlying
the tapestry of beliefs and attitudes. From traditional dream signs and dreams
"meant for others" to picking numbers and deja vu, Dream-singers illuminates a
wealth of interpretations and approaches, offering every reader invaluable
insights into a distinctly American spiritual tradition.

Geomancy A Method For Divination
by Franz Hartmann
Geomancy, or "divining by means of the earth," was originally carried out by making marks in
the dirt with a divining stick and then determining the geomantic symbols from these marks.
It's based on the idea that our movement is influenced by the energies in circulation within
and around us. This book explains the modern method of geomancy using just a writing tool and
a piece of paper to obtain incredibly in-depth information. There are 16 geomantic symbols
that correspond to planetary energies and zodiacal signs. The book explains the symbols, how
to compile them, and how to read them. The three geomancy methods described herein are very
simple but provide different levels of information.
Included are 2,048 answers to 16 common questions and blank geomantic charts that you can
photocopy to use for your divinations. 213 pages, paperback.

Reading Tea Leaves by A Highland Seer
From time immemorial, humankind has tried to uncover the meaning of
divining the future. While druids followed the stars and Greeks sought counsel
from the Oracle at Delphi, the "spae-wives" of the Scottish highlands found the
answers to life in the tea-leaf patterns in their cups. Lines of dust meant
journeys, swans foretold of love, and snakes warned of disaster. These and other
symbols were passed down from generation to generation. This work reproduces the
writings of an anonymous Scottish seer who recorded the secrets of the ancient
art of reading tea leaves, including an alphabetical list of the various signs
and their meanings. It features illustrations of sample cups, and their
interpretations show how to weave and balance the symbols together, transforming
a cup of tea into the voice of the Fates. The book combines that manuscript with
modern writings on the history and philosophy of foretelling the future.

Tea Cup Reading
by Sasha Fenton, paperback
Originally published in 2000; this is a 2002 edition. This wonderful
"Quick and Easy Guide to Tasseography" is the best modern book on the subject of
telling fortunes by tea leaf reading according to traditional Scottish, English,
and Irish methods. It also teaches how to read coffee grounds in the Eastern
European style. Profusely illustrated with images of tea-leaf and coffee ground
symbols, it gives the time-honoured meanings for the images, along with
historical overviews of tea and coffee, including their social impact and some
of their medical uses. If you need just one book on tasseography, to get you
started reading tea leaves for friends and clients, this is the one. It is fun,
upbeat, informative, and completely accurate with respect to the "old ways" of

The Divining Hand
by Christopher Bird
"To dowse," says the author of this definitive study of the divining art, "is to search
with the aid of a handheld instrument such as a forked stick or a pendular bob on the end of
a string - for anything: subterranean water flowing in a narrow underground fissure, a pool
of oil or a vein of mineral ore, a buried sewer pipe or electrical cable, an airplane downed
in a mountain wilderness, a disabled ship helplessly adrift in a gale, a lost wallet or dog,
a missing person, perhaps a buried treasure." Co-author of The Secret Life of Plants,
Christopher Bird has filled this book with exciting, documented stories, most of them
illustrated with photographs and diagrams. It provides a complete history of the art of
dowsing around the world and discusses in detail the various existing theories attempting to
explain this extraordinary phenomenon.

VULVAMANCY: A Guide to Yoni Divination and Magic.
by Dr. Jeremy Weiss
While researching character and divinatory
readings, Dr. Jeremy Weiss discovered a system
for modern day yoni reading, based on ancient
texts and information transmitted to him in his
travels. “What is yoni reading?” you ask. Well,
let's just say it's like palmistry, only “down there.”
Not a hoax, not a dream, not an imaginary story,
vulvamancy is a true mantic art -- and contained
within these pages are eye-opening and mindexpanding
instructions on both historical and
contemporary yoni reading, so you too can learn
how to “read a pussy.”
Also featured are chapters on sacred sexuality,
neo-tantra rituals, and folk magic spells for those
equipped with, or worshipful of, vulvas.
Dr. Jeremy Weiss is a vascular, interventional, and
diagnostic radiologist in Seattle who received his
degree from Nova Southeastern University, trained
at Columbia and Harvard, and has been in practice
for more than 20 years.

by Aunt Sally (pseudonym)
Orig. pub. circa 1890; this is a facsimile reprint of a 1920s
ed. A curiosity of hoodoo gambling magic, the text consists of four separate
lists of objects and situations found in dreams with interpretations and lucky
numbers for playing Policy, an illegal (and now obsolete) "numbers" game once
popular in the black community. Old spiritual supply labels and blues songs
often contain coded messages expressed in numbers from this book. Also included
is a 19th century French divination system called the Oraculum or Book of Fate.
There are interpretations and number picks for all dreams.

Billy Bing's Dream Book
by Billy Bing (pseudonym)
Orig. pub. circa 1951; this is a 22nd edition 1994 reprint. This
is the most stripped-down and condensed of all the old-time dream books. Not
much to look at, it is set apart from the others because it also contains
material on lottery or lotto rundowns and work-outs, methods of number selection
that do not rely on the symbolic divination of dreams. The two betting systems
-- dream interpretation on the one hand and lottery rundowns and work-outs on
the other -- are almost never mixed, so this is a convenient bridge between
hoodoo based dream lore
and numerology-based "system betting."

FOLKLORE STUDIES:
BOOKS ON THE FOLKLORE AND SOCIOLOGY OF MAGIC AND RELIGION
|
Folklore is the study of people's customs, beliefs, and practices -- especially
those which are not imposed on them by mass-marketing or global media
corporations. The study of folklore contains many branches, including the study
of songs, dances, stories, magic, and religions which are transmitted from
person to person rather than devised by a paid "creative team" and force-fed to
the public via outlets such as films and television. Because folklore is
transmitted personally, its content varies from culture to culture, and people
with an interest in the subject often like to compare the customs of one culture
with those of another.
The books in this section deal with folklore in its many aspects, but with a
focus on magic and religion, and a special emphasis on how African American
rootwork, conjure, and hoodoo developed in America and where the practice of
magic stands in today's American culture.

The Dictionary of Demons, By Michelle Belanger
The Dictionary of Demons starts with a simple premise: names have power. In medieval and
Renaissance Europe, it was believed that speaking a demon’s true name could summon it, compel
it, and bind it.
Occult scholar Michelle Belanger has compiled the most complete compendium of demonic names
available anywhere, using both notorious and obscure sources from the Western grimoiric tradition.
Presented alphabetically from Aariel to Zynextyur, more than 1,500 demons are introduced,
explored, and cross-referenced by theme and elemental or planetary correspondence.
This meticulously researched reference work features fascinating short articles on demonology
and a wealth of woodcuts, etchings, and paintings depicting demons through the ages.

Black Magic looks at the origins, meaning, and uses of Conjure--the African
American tradition of healing and harming that evolved from African, European,
and American elements--from the slavery period to well into the twentieth
century. Illuminating a world that is dimly understood by both scholars and the
general public, Yvonne P. Chireau describes Conjure and other related
traditions, such as Hoodoo and Rootworking, in a beautifully written, richly
detailed history that presents the voices and experiences of African Americans
and shows how magic has informed their culture. Focusing on the relationship
between Conjure and Christianity, Chireau shows how these seemingly
contradictory traditions have worked together in a complex and complementary

Conjure Times: Black Magicians In America
by Jim Haskins and Kathleen Benson
A lively, interesting, carefully researched look at a unique aspect of
African-American history and culture that introduces the lives of black
magicians, beginning with Richard Potter, "America's First Negro Magician," son
of a plantation owner and a slave. Using black-and-white reproductions of
playbills, advertisements, woodcuts, and period photographs, the history of the
minstrel show and vaudeville is discussed as part of the development of
theatrical magic shows. Slavery, racial discrimination, and segregation are
discussed as part of the social history surrounding the lives of the performers
profiled. The authors note that personal information on many performers was
difficult to find, and the gaps help readers understand how much
African-American history has been lost. Descriptions of popular trademark tricks
are highlighted in boxes in each chapter. Budding magicians will find this book
appealing, and it will be a great addition to African-American history
collections.

Encountering Kali: In the Margins, at the Center, in the West
by Rachel Fell McDermott and Jeffrey J. Kripal
Encountering Kali explores one of the most remarkable divinities the world has seen, the
Hindu goddess Kali. She is simultaneously understood as a blood-thirsty warrior, a goddess
of ritual possession, a Tantric sexual partner, and an all-loving, compassionate Mother.
Popular and scholarly interest in her has been on the rise in the West in recent years.
Responding to this phenomenon, this volume focuses on the complexities involved in
interpreting Kali in both her indigenous South Asian settings and her more recent Western
incarnations. Using scriptural history, temple architecture, political violence, feminist
and psychoanalytic criticism, autobiographical reflection, and the goddess's recent guises
on the Internet, the contributors pose questions relevant to our understanding of Kali, as
they illuminate the problems and promises inherent in every act of cross-cultural
interpretation.

Hollywood Be Thy Name: African American Religion in American Film, 1929-1949
by Judith Weisenfeld
From the earliest years of sound film in America, Hollywood studios and independent producers
of "race films" for black audiences created stories featuring African American religious practices.
In the first book to examine how the movies constructed images of African American religion,
Judith Weisenfeld explores these cinematic representations and how they reflected and contributed
to complicated discourses about race, the social and moral requirements of American citizenship,
and the very nature of American identity.
Drawing on such textual sources as studio production files, censorship records, and discussions
and debates about religion and film in the black press, as well as providing close readings
of films, this richly illustrated and meticulously researched book brings religious studies
and film history together in innovative ways.

Nickell's Botanical Ready Reference by J. M. Nickell
Originally published circa 1885; this is a 1974 facsimile reprint. Back in
the 19th century, the Nickell and Murray company was one of the leading
suppliers of bulk herbs to the medical and magical communities. J. M. Nickell
prepared this exhaustive catalogue of the common names and Latin taxonomic names
of such herbs for the use of pharmacists; it even contains an entire section of
German language common names, as many 19th century pharmacists were
German-American. Abbreviated codes for the medical uses of the plants are also
included. This is the largest database of common and taxonomic names ever

This Amazing Book
Hoodoo Herb and Root Medicine
Opens the Door to Better Health
This Amazing Book is by Sunrae Products Company
and is restored, revised, and edited by catherine yronwode.
In 1947, when it was first offered for sale, This Amazing Book was a rural herbalist's
delight. Published by the strangely obscure Sunrae Products Company in the tiny town of
Ogema, Wisconsin, it was marketed via a series of small classified ads in popular
do-it-yourself magazines, and gave traditional rootworkers an introduction to the
convenience of mail- order supplies.
The anonymous author took the secret of his or her identity to the grave, but the data
supplied here about down-home treatments with herbs, roots, seeds, and flowers forms the
foundation of modern herbal medicine.
Now, on the 70th anniversary of its original publication, the Lucky Mojo Curio Company is
proud to present a restored and revised edition of this essential text, newly edited by
catherine yronwode and illustrated with the classic botanical art of F. Schuyler Mathews.
Filled with historically valuable medical lore, this beautiful book belongs in every
conjure worker's library.

THE SPIRITUAL CHURCH MOVEMENT:
BOOKS ABOUT SPIRITUALISM
|
Spiritualism centers around the belief that the dead are able to communicate
with the living, whether via dreams or other signs, or through the assistance of
a gifted spirit medium. Spiritualist churches, organizations, and associations
do not adhere to a single creed; in fact, some groups specifically renounce the
concept of having a creed and prefer that each member understand the truth of
spirit contact through personal experience. A variety of sources have influenced
the development of the many differing modern Spiritualist denominations. Among
these influences, one can see clear traces of Protestant Christian, Pentecostal
Christian, Catholic Christian, Quaker, New Thought, Deist, Hindu, Theosophical,
and Neo-Pagan concepts. For instance, some Spiritualist organizations endorse
the concept of the Summer-Land as a place where spirits reside after physical
death, while others endorse the idea of ongoing spiritual reincarnation in
physical bodies on Earth. Members of one Spiritualist body are unlikely to be
entirely comfortable with the beliefs in another body that differs widely from
their own, hence these organizations are considered as separate denominations in
the over-arching religion of Spiritualism.

WHAT IS HOODOO?
Hoodoo is a form of
predominantly African-American folk magic, unlike
Voodoo, which is an African
religion. Hoodoo, also known as
conjure, rootwork, and tricking, is a down
home, old-style form of folk-magic practice
that developed in Southern states like
Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee,
Kentucky, Virginia, Louisiana, North
Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and
Missouri from the joining of a number of
separate cultures and magical paths.
Hoodoo primarily consists of African and
Native American herbalism and sorcery,
into which has been incorporated elements of
wisdom and spell-casting from Scottish,
Irish, English, Jewish, and European
traditions of witchcraft, granny-magic,
shamanism, kitchen-witchery, enchantment,
and occult grimoires. Regional synonyms for
hoodoo include
conjuration,
conjure,
witchcraft, or
rootwork.
If you would like to know more more about
hoodoo, its theory, practices, and forms, search
